To begin this autobiography, I want to add my opinion about the chapter on The Church
and the Fiction Writer. In all good opinions, I agreed mostly with what Flannery O’Connor argued in her writing. I was born and raised in the Catholic faith, and yet I have always been torn between my love of horror novels and the notion of being “a model Christian.” My grandmother and aunt were skeptical when I told them this past Christmas that I wanted to focus on horror and fantasy writing. To them, it wasn’t an appropriate route, and in Mexican-American customs, they worried I’d end up possessed from my writing. This, in turn, made me second guess myself- of course, I had no other support in the matter. I was thrilled after reading O’Connor’s argument that the church should encourage and support the fiction genre. It made me feel validated after our class discussion, I felt ready to continue my short stories. Of course, they’re nowhere near finished, but I am looking forward to using my faith not as a symbolic device, but as my drive for writing more.
