What surprised me as I read chapter 6 is that Theresa of Lisieux was told to avoid the church's life and even dissuaded by priests and her father. I would have assumed her family and peers would be excited for her, as becoming a nun was considered a noble profession. However, I assume it was because all the girls chose to follow the church, thus not being able to have children. I suppose if we were to talk about legacy, her father would probably want his name to live on my grandkids. It also made me a little upset to see her father get vexed at the fact that Theresa was given gifts in chapter 5. Reading him complain about the fact that Theresa was becoming a young woman and in no need of presents made me feel like he was deflecting his frustrations on her. Perhaps he did not want his daughter to grow up so soon. On a lighter note, hearing of her pilgrimage to the church and resting place of different saints made me recall the religious pilgrimage my aunt and grandmother made. We drove to New Mexico, and like Theresa, visited different churches and statues that represented Christ.
