I am so torn between this book! Here I am at 2:21 am on a Friday, finished with the book, and I have too many choice words! Firstly, I am angry at the ending- now I know why everyone was bittersweet about it in class. Erland does not deserve Kristin, and hearing the backstory about the father and mother made this all the more bitter! Quite frankly, all of this would have been solved if marriage was not such a highly regarded thing, as well as if Arne had lived. The wedding was such a melancholy moment, yet it was interesting to read Singrid Unsdset end the story with the parents. I suppose their story was a paradox to the young couple, and perhaps foreshadowing the second book. The story was rich with beauty and complex characters, making them all the more relatable, yet I didn’t seem to like any of them. I wanted to hit Kristin at the third part of the book, considering Undset cleverly put that she NOW wants to change her mind after all that she and Erland had been through, and yet I didn’t want her to marry Erland because he’s a lazy good-for-nothing who goes back on his word and only wants Kristin. After all, she is young! I loved the story, and yet I am terrified of her last two books in the trilogy because I can only guess it ends with disaster; Kristin becoming her mother, Erland betraying her, and I bet anything she will be a nun by the end of the saga!
